"I'm so sorry!"
"Sorry, I've not eaten!"
"Sorry, I've just eaten!"
"Oh! How embarrassing!"
When you're on the treatment table and your tummy makes noises, please don't be sorry/embarrassed etc, it's a GOOD thing and in fact there's a medical term for it.
Miriam Webster dictionary - borborygmus (noun)
"bor-bo-ryg-mus"
The sound of the movement of gas in the intestine
(And I would add - and/or the movement of fluids too)
An odd word that I always find difficult to remember, it comes from the Greek word, borboryzein, 'to rumble' !
"But why does it only happen when I'm having treatment?
It's probably happening all day, you just don't notice until you're in a quiet room, but also
during treatment there is usually a relaxation effect happening.
When the body relaxes, your 'insides' relax, all your organs and visceral tissues then have more space to move, to spread out a bit - I know, a very professional term..
This in turn, allows more gases and fluids to move more freely,
often resulting in the rumblings and gurglings.
So from the therapist's perspective, it's a positive sign that a 'de-tensing' of the internal 'gubbins' is happening, signalled by borborygmus (or maybe lots of borborygmi - plural)
We all want relaxed, happy, healthy insides!
There's a lot in there and, if you're female, there's even more with the addition of the uterus and ovaries etc.
CranioSacral Therapy & Massage
The whole digestive system can be very sensitive to stress, tightening up and not working as well as it might.
I treat a lot of people with craniosacral therapy for this very reason. It is highly effective at
a) relaxing out the nervous system and therefore
b) relaxing the internal organs of the abdomen
Stress is high throughout the entire world right now.
If you, or someone you know, is experiencing high levels of stress, which is possibly affecting their gut, may I suggest a CranioSacral treatment or massage?
Depending on the cause of the tension, treatment can improve your discomfort significantly.
