So what is Clinical Massage ?

Individualised treatments to reduce physical pain and/or
reduce the body’s response to stress and anxiety.

Think physiotherapy with a holistic
mind-body approach.

The Biopsychosocial Model

(I know, it’s a bit of a mouthful!)

As an Advanced Clinical Massage Therapist, I base all consultations on the Biopsychosocial model of pain/health.

The human body is not a collection of separate parts!

They are all connected, and therefore will impact each other in one way or another.

Detailed Consultations

My initial consultations are in-depth and can take up to 20-25 mins.
(If you’re having a general massage, the consultation will not need to be so detailed)
If you have complex medical conditions, it’s ususally best to book a 90 minute apppointment
to ensure that you receive as much treatment time as possible.

Consultation questions that may be asked:

  • desired outcome of treatment?

  • how long have you been in pain?

  • what makes it worse? Does anything relieve it?

  • what medication you are taking?

  • current/previous life stressors?

  • are you working? What is your body doing?

  • are you studying? Caring?

  • do you grind your teeth? Had dental treatment recently?

  • do you wear glasses?

“But why has it happened?”

A question nearly every patient asks in an initial appointment for pain relief

Education and Rehab

As well as treating your pain, my aim is to help you to understand why it has happened. For example:

  • how your body is trying to ‘keep you safe’ by spasming (so that you stop doing the aggravating activity!

  • Trigger point referral pathways (the maddest being trigger points in the calf muscle that can refer to the jaw!)

  • the physiology of pain

and how to manage it going forward to reduce the flare-ups
For example:

  • teaching pain-relieving exercises

  • basic rehab exercises to reduce flare-ups

  • how to strengthen weaker muscles

  • helping you to recognise when you need treatment - and when you don’t !

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Ideally, 3 treatments weekly, so that we can work out which are the best techniques to use for your issue, but everyone is different.
After the 3rd one, the aim is to not need to see you for 2 weeks, then 3-4 weeks etc.
Some patients then come in, only when their issue has flared up and their ‘tool box’ of exercises are not being sufficient.
Others choose to come in on a regular basis every month, or every 3 months, or however long gap we can stretch it to.
If after 3 sessions, my treatments are not working for you, I will refer you on to another type of treatment. I have a large bank of therapists in the Edinburgh area that I trust, to whom I can confidently refer to.

Again, everyone and every body and every issue is different, so knowing how treatments you will need is a tricky question!

If you’re unsure whther my treatments may be right for you, or if you have any questions, you can email me here
